As a corporate service provider, we value our clients and their advisors and strive to keep them happy and satisfied. However, we may encounter some challenging situations that require tact and diplomacy. Here are some suggestions on how to manage some frequent scenarios with wit and charm.
Scenario 1: Your client (or more likely their advisor) wants a lower price for your services.
You may feel like saying: Of course, I can lower my price. How about half off? And while we are at it, why don’t I just do it for free and send you a check for your trouble?
But that would be impolite and unprofessional. Instead, you could say: Thank you for your interest in my services, but I am sorry I cannot give you a lower price. My fees reflect the value and quality of my work, and I hope you respect that. After all, you do not want to compromise on quality, do you?
Scenario 2: Your client criticizes the quality of your work.
You may want to say: How can you say that you do not like my work? Do you know how much effort I put into this project? Do you think this is a piece of cake? Do you think I am a wizard? Do you think I know what you want?
But that would be hostile and unprofessional. Instead, you could say: I apologize for disappointing you with my work. Could you please explain what exactly is the problem with it? I am always willing to listen and learn from your feedback. After all, your satisfaction is my goal.
Scenario 3: Your client backs out of the contract at the last minute.
You may feel like saying: Are you serious? You are backing out of the contract now? After all the work and dedication I invested in this project? After all the assurances and expectations you set for me? How can you do this to me?
But that would be irrational and unprofessional. Instead, you could say: I am saddened to learn that you are backing out of the contract. Could you please tell me what led you to this decision? Is there anything I can do to persuade you otherwise? If not, I hope we can end our relationship on a positive note and collaborate again in the future.
These are some of the ways you can manage challenging clients with humor and grace. Naturally, each situation is unique and needs a tailored response. But the key is to remain cool, courteous, and professional, while also expressing your individuality and wit. This can help you transform a bad situation into a good one, or at least reduce the harm.
